Alternate picking is a picking technique where you alternate between down and up strokes. This method can help develop the right-hand technique to be more consistent and can help build speed, precision, and control. These exercises will help develop your right-hand technique as well as the coordination between your right and left hand.
Start Slow: Begin by picking a single string (e.g., the low E string), and practice moving the pick back and forth. Try to use as little motion as possible in the right hand to achieve the desired sound.
Accuracy Over Speed: Prioritize accuracy over speed. Speed will come with time as you get the technique right. I highly encourage using a metronome with the exercises. This can be a concrete way to track your progress.
Exercise 1: Open strings. This example is on the open E, but practice alternate picking each open string.
Exercise 2: Adding the left hand.
Exercise 3: Changing strings
Exercise 4: String-skipping
